Recap
While the party was going Pete took a moment to move forward with the request from Huck, to steal something personal of Barnabas’. He went up stairs past Paul and up to Barnabas’ office. With the door locked he went through Gus’ room, out the window and used his golden wings to move around to Barnabas’ window. He jimmied it open with relative ease and moved in beginning to search the desk before spotting Barnabas’ iconic bowler dangling from a coat rack. Hat in hand he moved down the basement and called Huck to hand it off. Huck paid him and departed after complaining about setting the meet in a sewer.
The next morning after the party chaos while on his way to the Sips Pete was greeted by a familiar jingle in the same alley as before. He entered and there was Huck, waiting with the bowler and more money. He layed out info and a new deal to Pete. His ritual revealed that while Barnabas wasn’t a direct threat to Mercury he was preparing to make a deal that would become one. He wanted Pete to watch and if possible stop the deal. Pete asked for more info, but all he really got was that this all boiled down to a hunch and feeling that Huck was getting from Mercury. He took the hat and money and said he’d look into it.
Pete showed up a little too late to catch the morning meeting and found Gus practicing napping. After speaking with Gus and hearing about Gus’ strange dream Pete asked after Purrcival, who was out visiting someone. Not one to waste daylight Pete stepped out to find and contract someone to look into Barnabas and Frances Finley.
The next morning everyone was actually able to gather together at the Celestial Sips. They sat and briefly discussed what they were pursuing, what they could pursue, and other matters before Pete, having missed the events of the party and the meeting the following morning realized he might be able to extract some additional information from their dead foes if one’s body was still around. Gus had, for some reason, hung on to the head of the Pyrite Gang lieutenant which was left by the intruders. Jimmie was flabbergasted, but what followed was strange for everyone.
With the head Pete was able to magically dissolve coins into magic which animated the dead head and bind it to answering some questions. He asked the head about I DON’T REMEMBER THE FIRST TWO. He then asked the head what it would want as a form of revenge as it went to death and it requested that the heads of the Pyrite Gang be replaced.
The crew then set about their days with varying degrees of involvement in their mission to find more information on BH.
Pete met with the underworld asset he had tasked with digging up information on Barnabas Moon and Frances Finley. While most of the info was confirming things he and the crew already knew a few new pieces of information came to light. Firstly, that Barnabas seemed desperate in his attempts to reach Ms. Finley and find out more about BH and the symbol. But secondly, that if you went to the King of the Jungle Club in the Entertainment District and ordered a Dust and Echoes from the bar it was essentially the beginning of the interview process for getting a job with BH, who were throwing around a lot of money in the Moonfall City underworld lately. But the contact said that a lot of people who were working for them were winding up stolen from or missing.
It being Sunday, Paul couldn’t continue his research at the library, so instead took the time to make sure things were all set at the Sips before taking the time to pre-pay his rent for the next 20 months. He was growing concerned as this situation grew that Cindy wouldn’t have a place to live if the worst should happen to him while dealing with this.
Velvet reported in for her day job at the Silver Reflections Diving Company and while her job that day was unremarkable, she did learn that the strange water dragon thing from a month back had been growing and a small dog had gone missing in its area of the lake. Keziah recommended avoiding the area if able and caution if not.
Gus dove in harder on trying to lucid dream, with the intent of trying to play back the dream he’d had the last two nights. He was able to turn a dream about rummaging through trash and finding an incredible burger into the very dream he’d been having. By manipulating the dream he was able to get a sense of Luna’s fear and pain. However, in doing so and trying to interact with the dream he drew the attention of the serpent. The insatiable hunger of it driving him to whimper back in the waking world. He was stirred by Purrcival and Pete who were concerned for him and he told them all what he had learned.
Rhys took the time to go poking around his usual contacts along the walls for any Lunatic sightings since post party the stores at the speakeasy were quite low. Unfortunately, the only rumors swirling right now were about a massive burrowing one out in the crags that people were actively avoiding because of how dangerous it seemed.
While waiting at the Sips Purrcival got a brown wrapped non-descript package that only had his name on it. He took it up to his office to open and inside he found a few choice cuts of steak… a little puzzled he moved the steaks and papers they were wrapped in aside and hidden within the other papers were some photos and paperwork all pointing to a Lunatic harvesting operation by the Duran crime family… a sentient Lunatic harvesting operation. An unsigned letter requested a meeting to discuss helping deal with this problem. So Purrcival headed off to Luther Minks butcher shop and there met the man and went over the situation. These photos and some paper work were what Cipriano had gotten shot for and was currently serving time for a B&E. As long as these were in the wind Cipriano’s life was at risk and Minks didn’t know who to trust in the family given the circumstances, so he’d turned to someone he knew Cipriano trusted and would want to help get this resolved before someone whacked him. Purrcival was able to deduce the location, the office of a lawyer who worked for the Duran family, Hal L. Apeeno. He told Minks he’d look into it and try to find more info that could help deal with the situation.
Purrcival also let people know he was going to treat them to a steak dinner at the Sips that evening and had Quince prepare them. While enjoying the meal the crew discussed what they had learned and done that day. There were more leads forming, but still nothing solid enough to know who BH was or what they were up to. Purrcival also laid out the situation with the Duran crime family and suggested investigating tonight under cover of darkness, most of the crew agreed to help, though Paul wanted to only work as a lookout and Velvet wanted no part of it suggesting it could draw bad attention to them and the Sips if they were caught. Jimmie, desperate for answers about BH didn’t really know what to say, but half heartedly agreed with Velvet by telling them to be careful and not bring more trouble to the Sips.
The crew then left for the Apeeno Law Offices. And once there found the place closed for the night and the side door from the pictures. Rhys detected that the locking mechanism included some alarm magics that would trigger with tampering. The crew then discussed how best to break in before settling on Gus summoning a snake-like nature spirit with long, thin monkey arms to squeeze under the door and open it from the inside. No sound was let out and the crew hoped that meant the alarm had not triggered, but it was impossible to know for sure as they started to head inside and prepared to move quickly.
