The Celestials and their Children
The Celestials are, for lack of a better term, the gods of a Moonfall City Blues campaign. There are two types that people worship.
The Near Celestials dwell in the Orbits Above, their massive and round bodies moving through space in orbit around each other. They are mostly seen as neutral, capricious, and cryptic beings, but their proximity and the greater understanding of them leads to them being perceived as sometimes benevolent and being loosely worshipped. There are nine of them in total and each is attributed to certain aspects of mortal life. If traveling one might say a prayer to Mercury for safe travel. A sailor might constantly worship Neptune in hopes of bountiful fishing. And a soldier might have a small altar to Mars in their home or backyard.
In the Void Beyond there are the Far Celestials. These beings are more inscrutable than the Near Celestials and their designs, domains and purposes are even more varied and alien. There are too many to count and they are manifold in name. They are the void itself, all the other stars, the comets and asteroids, and any other heavenly body you might imagine. It is believed that it is one of their countless number which struck Luna and damaged her during the Shattering. Few worship these alien gods, but you can sometimes find people who find their less concrete nature and the embrace of cold, dark chaos to be a better fit for their lives. A group of workers hoping for change might secretly turn to Caesar, the Fleeting Hope, a comet which passes by every decade or so in hopes that the being will bless their plots against their Boss. A lost drunken sailor with no prospects might seek the comfort of Chaos, the Void Mother, and madly laugh at their own misfortune while admiring the beauty of her nothingness. A cult of aristocrats might make sacrifices to Charon, the Dancing Death and Pluto, the Circling Cessation, who sit just beyond the Orbits Above in twinned orbit and guard the line between that place and the Void Beyond in hopes to extend their own lives and stop him from claiming them.
Both types of Celestials don’t communicate or interfere in mortal lives directly. Instead it is through magical intervention. That traveler might make it safely if their prayer was earnest enough. That sailor might get more fish if he keeps worshiping. That soldier might come back home alive if his altar has a fresh sacrifice. But the Celestials all have children which do lurk in dark places of the world. These children, while reflective of their parents, are far more personable. They can move between the realms, they can roam the world of their own accord, and they can make bargains on behalf of their parents. They can even have conversations, personal dealing, and lay with mortals and the resulting children are different ancestries. They can be likened to demi-gods, fae, angels, and demons, but they take many forms and come in many flavors. They also rarely act in open and obvious ways, choosing instead to use shadows and guile to enact their and their parent’s will. While the “gods” are called Celestials, their children are referred to by their parentage, such as a child of Luna being called a Lunachilde.
