Recap
The next morning the crew decided to divide and conquer on some of the leads they had that they could pursue. Paul and Rhys decided to return to the library and continue to look through books and records hoping that they could find something solid on the leads they had gotten close to last time. Purrcival really wanted to check out the supposed facility in his old village and convinced Gus to go with him. Velvet reported for her day job at the diving company. And Pete held down the fort after the others left long enough to have Barnabas finally show up.
Paul and Rhys would spend the better part of the day buried in paperwork, but those flattened trees bore some real fruit. They discovered the Sable Aid Group, a non-profit organization which donated to various Lunatic research enterprises, including very recently having donated to an asylum for them at a benefit gala held by Shirley Knight, a candidate for mayor with a platform geared towards further prohibition of magic and Moon Dust.
This led them to dig through further information on just who was behind the Sable Aid Group and how any of this might relate to the properties that the crew had been pointed at by the merc from the raid. By chance and determination they would spend the rest of the day discovering some significant information. The properties were owned by separate groups, but ultimately eventually connected a large, but secretive company that had connections to both the properties and the Sable Aid Group, Sable Incorporated. Their current public facing board members were I. Lyons (Chairwoman), F. Finley (CFO), and R. Zoric (CSO). While the two didn’t know exactly who R. Zoric or I. Lyons was, they both recognized F. Finley, and surmised it was very likely to be Frances Finley. This info in tow after a long day they returned to the Celestial Sips.
Meanwhile, Velvet was out on a larger dive with some corporate retreat thing. A dozen suits had wanted to blow off some steam and do a tour of a part of the lake. Velvet, Keziah, and Rupert Parker, the second best diver, though a little full of himself had taken one of the boats out to an area where both a couple of wrecks and some mining equipment that were mostly safe to look at were. The group wanted to all go at once, but safety-wise Keziah wouldn’t have it and eventually agreed to let a pair of groups go down.
Velvet guided her group to the wrecks first while Rupert would take his group to the mining area. She guided them and allowed them to explore first a sunk Silver Reflections vessel, and then an old hauler that had sunk during the days of Moon Dust scarcity before the war. When they were making their way up-slope to investigate the mining area Velvet and one of the others, Ira, noticed something amiss with the water flow and some tumbling silt. Rapidly signaling for the group to take cover in the old hauler, the group avoided getting pummeled by a mudslide and some mining equipment.
After things settled Velvet discovered someone had been caught in the debris and quickly freed them and handed them off to Ira before going to investigate what had happened and met Rupert’s group on the way. After some quick signals the two groups regrouped and headed up to the surface where the extent of the injuries were discerned and some first aid was applied, with Velvet, Rupert, and Ira helping Keziah get things sorted. Some of the suits were frustrated, but a combination of Keziah and Ira were able to convince them to come back another time under Velvet’s more professional gaze.
Purrcival and Gus made their way first across the city and then out of it to his village just outside the walls towards the southern end of the Industrial district. On the journey Purrcival relayed the tale of his village’s decimation that led to him coming to the city. A rather large group of lunatics had attacked, and started killing people. He remembered that they were all different kinds of lunatics and seemed to loosely be led by the one he wanted to find and kill, a borrowing one which spat acid. The villagers took refuge in a community building, hiding a few of the children in a crawl space below, including Purrcival. When the chaos and sounds stopped he emerged to find carnage and damage everywhere. He and the few other survivors decided it best to go to the city for refuge and thus began his life connected to the underworld of Moonfall City.
Gus stirred by this recounting and Purrcival distracted as they moved through the village were surprised by a person clearing their throat as they approached that very community hall, which appeared as reclaimed by nature as the rest of the ruins, but seems to also have intact windows and doors. When they turned the face that met theirs was one Purrcival recognized as he tried to explain his presence, one of those very people who hid with him in the crawl space… Calix Solis, who was dressed up like a merc in camo and security gear.
Purrcival tried to plead with Calix, but in the end Calix wouldn’t budge much. He would let them go and not report them, but that’s the best he could do. Too determined to turn back now and stung a little by an old friend not helping, Purrcival used his command over vines to capture Calix, and attempt to subdue him, but not before Calix could get a shout for help off.
With the idea that some backup might show up, the two quickly hatched a plan. Gus would take the form of a predator, and Purrcival would play it like he was hunting it and Calix had gotten in the way. A group of 3 would eventually come to investigate and the ruse mostly worked, but with the securities guard down and the opportunity open Purrcival decided to act, and he and Gus launched into taking out the small group of three, but unfortunately it ended with a gun shot and a scream.
Shortly after a much larger group came from the same area and set to attacking Purrcival and Gus, but they had strange lunatic attack dogs. Gus was able to communicate with them, but they were under some sort of control with a device one of the security mercs had. In the chaos of battle Purrcival took a chance to try to break the collars connected to the device and set the hounds loose, allowing Gus to convince them to attack their former masters, who had way more magic to eat.
Unfortunately, during this chaos the mercs had pressed in, their numbers giving them an advantage and Gus, fearing for their lives, told Purrcival it was time to go, with or without him. Purrcival, frustratedly realizing his eagerness to learn more had gotten them in over their heads decided to agree and deployed some Darksmoke Vials in order to retreat into the woods.
Once safe from pursuit Gus took to the air in the form of a bird, leaving Purrcival to travel back to the Sips on his own with the reality of his decisions and the risks he’d exposed them both to.
Everyone eventually reconverged at the Sips where Pearl and Quince were holding down the fort for the cafe and Barnabas’ light was surprisingly on. Velvet arrived first and spent some time relaxing in her room before being interrupted by Gus tapping on her window, who promptly flopped in her lap and complained very unspecifically about Purrcival being a butt.
Next Paul and Rhys would return, asking Pearl for some coffee for the crew and then letting Barnabas and Velvet know they had news. As everyone gathered in the speakeasy, Purrcival finally arrived. The group shared what they had learned. Barnabas wasn’t too happy with the idea that this organization was the one targeting them, since they had helped him get his factory going back in the day through his connections with Frances Finley. The revelations on the table the crew started to wonder what their next move might be, but they’d figure that out after some rest, as Barnabas had some news to share as well, but he had Pete out double checking something for him. It would also be good to include Jimmie with whatever the crew’s next move was. Whether they investigated one of the facilities, went to the King of the Jungle club, chose to dig into Shirley Knight, or even dared dig directly into the names they had and Sable Incorporated would depend on what else Barnabas would tell them, but all seemed like valid leads in their current situation.
