The Shattering

About 200 years ago an apocalyptic event happened which would pave the way for everything that has happened since.

Historians and theologians believe that a minor celestial, an unknown comet or meteor, struck the moon, Luna. The impact was at such speed and mass that chunks of her were blown downward towards our homes.

The resulting debris caused all manner of problems. First the impacts and dust clouds, but also wild fires and strange energies. That immediate aftermath killed plenty of people, but it was just the beginning.

Over the next few decades as Luna’s orbit wobbled and readjusted it played hell with the weather and bodies of water causing all manner of problems. Not to mention the secondary debris that broke through the atmosphere long after the initial impact.

The weirdest however, was the discovery of what debris from the moon could do. First it was creatures and plants near the impacts which mutated and began to emit strange magics. But eventually people figured out it was the very rocks from the moon doing that. Some adventurous souls tried it themselves and the rest is history.

The Shattering is sometimes thought of as a kind of dark ages for our history because of how dark and terrible the times were, but the truth is we’re still dealing with the ramifications, and the Dust War seems to show we aren’t any more civilized about it, we’re just less troubled by nature and more ourselves now.
